Florida State Battles Through 2 OT’s For Big Win

Florida State

Florida State women’s soccer team must have felt like they were in a time warp as they battled for the College Cup. Last year the Seminoles found themselves in a PK shootout for the title against Santa Clara. This year, after two overtime periods they were in the same scenario. This time, BYU stood between them and a title that had slipped through their fingers in 2020. Kick after kick the two teams put an increasingly massive amount of pressure on their goalies to save the day.

The match was all about defense in the first half. Combined, both teams could only manage five shots on goal. The game plan changed just a bit in favor of BYU in the second as the Cougars offense kept Florida State goalie Cristina Roque on her toes.

By the end of time neither offense had found net pushing the game into overtime. It was a repeat of how regular time had played out and continued into a second OT.

Florida State’s Clara Robbins, Heather Payne, Jaelin Howell made good on their kicks. Finally, Yujie Zhao delivered the winning PK to give the Seminoles the NCAA Women’s College Cup title, 4-3.
