Geoffrey Kirwa of Louisville is looking for a record and it looks like he’s on his way. He is now the second fastest athlete in collegiate history following his performance in the 3000 meter steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Stan Becton of NCAA.com recognized Kirwa in his article, ’20 midseason superlatives for the outdoor track and field season’ for the ‘Best non-collegiate record individual performance’. No small feat.
Clocking a time of 8:08.10 he came within 2.70 seconds of a tie with Henry Rono who set the high mark in May of 1978, 48 years prior. When you look at how Kirwa has progressed over the years it isn’t unlikely that he’ll dispose of his own mark. Will the NCAA Track and Field Championships offer a shot at catching up to Rono?
