Would a shot or two of Botox freshen up the Atlantic Coast Conference? The wrinkles of time are showing. New ACC commissioner Jim Phillips is looking at a facelift for the venerated league. According to a story by David Teel in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Phillips has everything out on the table. That includes a potential move of the conference headquarters out of Greensboro. Teel reports that Phillips has commissioned two consulting groups. Both will provide “a holistic and transparent review” of the ACC from top to bottom. There are no sacred cows. The question is, how will some of long term members of the conference feel about changes?

Newmark, a global commercial real estate services company will conduct the review of the headquarters. Phillips has engaged two former Power Five commissioners to examine the inner workings of the conference. Kevin Weiberg, formerly with the Big 12 and Jim Delany, formerly with the Big Ten will look at governance, branding, revenue generation plus budgets and staffing. The efforts will involve member school leadership and ACC employees with a report expected in November.

The conference’s presidents and chancellors encouraged Phillips to conduct a review of the conference according to Teel.

There are multiple fronts in which some hard questions and even tougher answers will emerge. Phillips has been very transparent with staff and member schools in regard to the review. Though some of the North Carolina based school AD’s would prefer the headquarters stay in their region they also expressed an understanding of why new additions to the conference want to take a look at the options.

Having an updated approach will help the conference meet new challenges. Phillips said, “In the end, we have to do what’s best for the conference.”
