’26 Preseason Rankings | Miami Tops ACC Nation Picks

Rankings

Our 2026 ACC football preseason composite power rankings point to another solid season for the Miami Hurricanes as they sit at number one. We’ve broken up the ACC Nation Power Rankings into 4 distinct segments. The Title Contenders, The Dark Horses, The Middle and The Lower Half. Data for the rankings was pulled Friday, June 12 and often these sources are moving targets which means the numbers change frequently. Let’s stick with our initial pull and then take a snap-shot view of the top 4 conference teams and what they bring to the field.

  • MIAMI – Title-game roster reloaded with QB the only real question
  • CLEMSON – Highest-variance team in the conference. SP+ and Vegas buy in but CBS doesn’t
  • LOUISVILLE – Top-tier backfield and a manageable schedule. Cardinals have a real path to Charlotte
  • SMU – Roughly two-thirds of the offense is back and CBS slotted them as high as No. 2

The Dark Horses include some of the most competitive and often surprising performers with the ACC. Can any of these teams break through this season?

  • VIRGINIA TECH – Coach Franklin’s portal haul drove the biggest SP+ jump in the conference
  • VIRGINIA – Off a school-record 11 wins the question for this season falls squarely on the QB
  • FLORIDA STATE – Boom/Bust wildcard with a four-spot spread across models
  • GEORGIA TECH – It’s a reload year after losing Haynes King and his coordinator
  • PITTSBURGH – QB is the swing factor and closing games is the test

The Middle is full of Carolina teams with each dealing with their own unique struggles.

  • DUKE – The defending champs were gutted by Miami’s portal raid and QB is questionable
  • NC STATE – C. J. Bailey returning keeps the floor respectable
  • NORTH CAROLINA – Year two under Bill Belichick and a nasty schedule presents challenges

The Lower Half may well be underrated. Let’s remember that ACC teams that are taken for granted often emerge to take a bite out of others. This portion of the rankings contains a number of teams that have been building ever so quietly in the background.

  • CALIFORNIA – Quietly competent and receiving too little national buzz
  • WAKE FOREST – Year two under Dickert and many lessons were learned in year one
  • SYRACUSE – One of the more underrated QB’s returns but the defense is the foundation
  • BOSTON COLLEGE – Cleaning up the TO’s and the defense must find their rush
  • STANFORD – The consensus cellar but we point to comments on Cal

ACC Nation’s Code Red has two programs rolling into the 2026 football season featuring the same critical vitals – a double-digit win ceiling and serious questions at quarterback. Two patients are on the table and if either can stabilize the QB room both can threaten a trip to Charlotte. Mismanage the situation and their season could well flatline by October.

Florida State – The Trauma Case

Back-to-back rough and tumble years with a head coach on the clock and a third straight new starter. The QB battle is the difference between a rebound and a coaching change and nobody can agree on the prognosis.

Virginia – The High-Stakes Hold

A school-record 11 wins and then Morris and Taylor walk out the door. The Cavaliers have the supporting cast to hold the line if the new arm doesn’t crash. It’s an intriguing situation on whether the vitals stay strong.
