The Wahoos keep grinding out the wins. They gave Tennessee a rocky start topping the Volunteers 6-0 in their Bracket 2 debut of the College World Series (CWS). The Cavaliers’ ace Andrew Abbott pitched six shutout innings and tamped down a potent Tennessee offense. The Volunteers over the course of the first five tournament games has averaged eight runs and cranked out 16 homers. That was not to be in the Sunday matchup. Abbott wrapped up six full innings throwing 104 pitches and 66 strikes. Matt Wyatt came in as relief in the seventh to finish with 45 pitches and 27 strikes.

Tennessee not only struggled at the plate but also on the mound going through four pitchers along the way. Starter Chad Dallas had 6.1 innings of work throwing 63 pitches and 48 strikes. Sean Hunley took the mound in the seventh, Redmond Walsh in the eighth and Camden Sewell in the ninth to finish the game for Tennessee.

Logan Michaels got things started for the Cavaliers in the third inning hitting his first home run of the year. The timing couldn’t have been better. Michael’s father, a pancreatic cancer survivor was in the stands and received the perfect Father’s Day gift. The bats, in typical Virginia fashion fell quiet for several innings thereafter.

Tennessee stirred the pot in the sixth loading the bases but Abbott refused to let anything to stick as he pitched his way out of the jam.

This is where the question comes into play. Hoos on first? The seventh inning opened with a Alex Tappen single. Jake Gelof laid down a SAC Bunt to move Tappen to second. Logan Michaels sent a shot into center field for a single that sent Tappen home. Then, Chris Newell got in on the fever with a shot to right field that brought Michaels in for the score. It wasn’t over.

The Volunteers traded out starter Dallas for Hunley on the mound to help stem the bleeding.

Newell welcomed Hunley immediately with a steal to second. Zack Gelof singled to right field bringing Newell home to up the score to 4-0. Gelof steals second and off a Max Cotier single to center field pushes the lead to 5-0. Kyle Teel grabbed a single to center field with Cotier advancing to third. A ground shot into a double play ended the inning for Virginia. Now you know the answer to Hoos on first.

Michaels put the ribbon on his Father’s Day gift coming in for the final score in the ninth to make the final, 6-0.

College World Series

Next up on the schedule for the Wahoos is No. 7 seed Mississippi State. This is the third meeting between the two teams. All three have come in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs are going with lefty Christian MacLeod. MacLeod has allowed 15 runs in his last 14 2/3 innings and four earned runs or more in each of his last three outings. Virginia is likely starting righty Griff McGarry who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the super regional game with Dallas Baptist.
