Sprint To The Finish – Week Seven Of ACC Nation Pigskin Picks

A sprint to the finish is in the works for both the Atlantic and Coastal Division of ACC college football. The back half of the schedule is now in full swing with the importance of games ratcheting up significantly. Wake Forest continues to be the leader in the Atlantic with a 4-0 conference and a 6-0 overall record good for an automatic bowl qualification. Pitt and Virginia Tech lead the Coastal with 1-0 conference records. Following this week’s matchup in Blacksburg one of these teams will take control of the division. The Panthers only have one blemish on their overall record of 4-1 while the Hokies are at 3-2. But these three teams aren’t the only stories when it comes to the divisional races.

In the Atlantic, NC State is sitting at 1-0 within the conference with a 4-1 overall record. The Pack are hitting the meat and potatoes of their schedule over the next two months and it’s challenging. That includes their November 13th game at Wake Forest. Could that be the determining factor for the Atlantic?

Clemson says, ‘Hold on Bubba’, we’re not out of this thing yet. The Tigers, who many have pushed aside may be locking and loading for the second half of the season. Word is there have been significant adjustments to the beleaguered offense and if ‘that team’ shows against Syracuse the Atlantic is about to become wild and woolly. Clemson sits at 2-1 in conference play and 3-2 overall. Amazingly, Florida State, who is 2-2 in ACC action and 2-4 overall is also making some strides.

Atlantic Anarchy and Coastal Chaos. It makes for some great entertainment. Speaking of which we’re not done with the Coastal. Virginia is right behind the Hokies with a 2-2 in-conference record and are 4-2 overall. The Hoos have one of the most dynamic passing offenses in the conference. Behind them with a 2-2 ACC record is Georgia Tech who is at .500 overall at 3-3. Though the Yellow Jackets can be sporadic at times this is a marked improvement over the first year Geoff Collins took over.

There isn’t even one ‘suspect’ pick among the bunch though we heard that Jim Q was considering picking Syracuse just to throw a wrench into the works. With seven prognosticators there will never be a tie so the split votes this week indicate the majority are going with Pitt over Virginia Tech, North Carolina over Miami and NC State over Boston College. Jim B considered the matchup between the Pack and Eagles the toughest choice this week. He also believes the Panthers will more than cover the current -5 posted at VegasInsiders.com.

Chris goes ‘homer’ on us with his Noles pick over the Tar Heels. A red flag flies over the Heels being a 17 1/2 point favorite. Everyone else is sticking with North Carolina.

It’s worth pointing out that Chris going against the grain netted a 5-0 pick record. His strategy? This pick was ‘from the heart’. It paid off. Now, back to the sprint to the finish of ACC + 1 college football.
