ACC Nation Staff @accnation –

Whew! Labor Day Weekend’s ACC college football debut was quite the mixed bag. In this week’s ACC Nation Power Poll you can see some of the impact the opening week performances. It certainly did on the staff’s opinion of teams in the rankings. There wasn’t one team that wasn’t impacted. Some was good, some was bad and some was more than a bit confusing. For context we’ll open with last week’s rankings. By the time we reach week three on the schedule things should be (emphasis) clearer, but who knows.

Last week we talked about how no one should be surprised that Clemson is at the top of our rankings. Even with an opening loss to Georgia they are still the team to beat in the conference. Then there’s Notre Dame. Despite finding themselves in a bind against Florida State still inspire enough confidence to retain the second spot.

The most immediate shift in attitude toward a team comes with the efforts of the Hokies against the Tar Heels. The win by Virginia Tech was enough to vault them into the Top 25. There’s no difference in how this group views the win either.

The rest of the teams may have moved up or down based upon some key factors of their performances. It won’t matter whether they’ve won or lost. You’ll notice that the total points assigned to each team have narrowed significantly.

Even though Georgia Tech and Florida State lost their games both moved up in the rankings. At least one voter saw more in the Yellow Jackets than everyone else. Meanwhile, the opposite was true with another voter in reference to Florida State.

This week’s slate of games will do little to sway the numbers. Unless, of course, there is an upset against one of our teams. Week three is when we should see some positive movement among Miami, Boston College, Pitt, Virginia and Wake Forest. These teams need to get into the meat and potatoes portion of their schedule. That will give everyone a feel for what they’re worth.

At the bottom, Duke itself no favor losing to Charlotte in a game they were expected to win. Syracuse climbed out of the cellar by defeating Ohio by far more than was expected.

With all of the teams, they’ll need to establish some consistency before the dust settles in the rankings.
