Recently, a column was posted here at ACC Nation about how Pitt football doesn’t get respect (You can check it out here). Personally, I have made it known that I haven’t been sold on Pitt. Maybe it’s just because I trust no one in the ACC Coastal to be consistently good from week to week. But, to be fair, they are currently the favorite in the Coastal. They are up two games in the loss column on Virginia.

After an impressive win over Virginia Tech on Saturday, I started to wonder about the types of offenses Pitt has faced to this point. They haven’t exactly played a murderer’s row of a schedule. They’ve faced UMass, one of the worst teams in FBS, New Hampshire, a bad FCS team, and two teams near the bottom of the Coastal: Georgia Tech and Virginia. They’ve also played Tennessee and Western Michigan non-conference action.

I dug in a little bit, and noticed something about the type of passing offenses they’ve faced. Here are the passing ranks of the FBS teams Pitt has faced to this point.

  • 48th, 66th, 81st, 105th, and 106th

Pitt has faced one FBS team ranked in the top 50 in passing. That team? Western Michigan, who they lost to. And to add to it, what two teams had the most passing yards against Pitt this season? The teams ranked 48th and 66th in passing. Those two teams? Western Michigan and Georgia Tech. And Tennessee, who is ranked 81st, would have beat them had they been playing the right quarterback during the entire game.

How does the rest of the season bode for Pitt? The rest of the season is bookended by the two worst passing teams on the schedule. Clemson, ranked 107th, and Syracuse, ranked 112th. In between are the toughest tests this season-Miami, now on it’s third string QB, ranked 26th, Duke, ranked 34th, UNC, ranked 30th, and the most daunting task of all, Virginia, ranked second.
