Those familiar with the ‘cheap seats’ in baseball, aka, the ‘nosebleed section’ know it’s also a fun place to be. Right now, it may feel like the ACC baseball season is as far away from the field as those seats but it really isn’t.
Fall ball has been underway for some time, therefore it’s literally right under our noses. D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers (who we spoke with over the summer on ACC Nation Podcast) and Aaron Fitt have a rundown of a select number of ACC teams with more to come. (Editor’s Note – You’ll only get a taste of each story as this feature is behind a paywall. It’s well worth the investment if you follow college baseball).
Last year was a wild ride in the conference. The ACC Baseball Championship is where we’ll start. Last year’s champions, Florida State battled through the tournament to defeat Louisville. In doing so, the Seminoles captured back to back titles and their eighth conference title overall.
Four ACC teams, Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina and NC State were named NCAA Regional Hosts. A total of six teams, including Duke and Louisville received NCAA Tournament bids.
Only North Carolina and Duke moved out of the regional competition to the Super Regionals. The Tar Heels fought their way into the College World Series in Omaha before falling to Oregon State. The Beavers were the eventual College World Series Champions after defeating Arkansas.
Following the season Florida State skipper Mike Martin announced that he’d return for one more year. There were more changes in the conference as Miami tapped Gino DiMare and Pitt named Mike Bell as their head coaches.
These ACC teams have released their 2019 schedule –
- Clemson Tigers
- Miami Hurricanes
- Pitt Panthers
- Virginia Cavaliers
- Virginia Tech Hokies
- Wake Forest Demon Deacons
The ACC Baseball Championship will once again head to Durham Bulls field in 2019. There may be some question regarding the future of the event, however.
According to a story in The Clemson Insider from May, ACC Commissioner John Swofford says there are more than a few other sites that are attractive.
As you can tell from reading the story the importance of continuity, ala, Omaha and the CWS isn’t lost on Swofford.
