Hit And Miss Of College Basketball Bracketology

Hit And Miss, ACC

There’s a bit of hit and miss when it comes to college basketball bracketology. Most of the time it’s the variables that throws a wrench into the works for the guys who crunch numbers. You know, transfer portals, opting out due to COVID, deciding to be a ‘one and done’ player or guys that just don’t click with their team or coach. These are factors that swing the pendulum radically from side to side. Not much you can do with these factors. You can assign it an ‘X’ and apply a subjective ranking but then we start to depart the world of tried and true statistics. With that little diatribe I introduce the latest bracketology from Joe Lunardi and take a look at how ACC teams are fairing.

Lunardi finds himself, along with Syracuse fans, in a very familiar place with the Orange. It’s almost like deja vu all over again as Cuse is team No. 69 after the numbers are all crunched. That means in Lunardi’s bracket watch, Syracuse is the first team out.

That’s not the only ACC that finds itself on the bubble. Virginia is among the last four byes in this latest version. But, before anyone gets too upset with these first two nuggets let’s make a point. These two teams are fairly frequent visitors to the NCAA’s so don’t expect that to change.

It’s seven men’s college basketball teams in for the ACC with Notre Dame returning to the top tier after a brief drought. Florida State is the only team dipping in Lunardi’s bracket and Virginia is on the rise. No explanation for the Seminoles slipping a bit but they may be more of a victim of other teams being shuffled rather than an issue with the team. All the rest are sitting comfortably.

How are the regions set up for 2022? For the West, San Francisco is the destination while the Midwest is all about Chicago. The East is set in Philadelphia and for the South it’s San Antonio. Here’s a look at the No. 1 seeds (and there’s a surprise in the East) and the teams from the conference.

  • West
  • #1 Gonzaga
  • #5 North Carolina
  • #7 Louisville
  • Midwest
  • #1 UCLA
  • #6 Florida State
  • #8 Notre Dame

  • East
  • #1 Texas (replacing Michigan)
  • #9 Virginia Tech
  • #10 Virginia
  • South
  • #1 Kansas
  • #3 Duke

As we’ve mentioned before, and nothing has changed, Duke is listed as an automatic qualifier by Lunardi indicating he believes the Blue Devils will take the ACC title.

It may seem a long way off but the NCAA Championship will be played in New Orleans on April 4. There’s still a few months to go before the official start of ACC men’s basketball.
