North Carolina men’s basketball is keeping the Tar Heel tradition alive and well. The hiring of Hubert Davis as head coach was revealed on Monday. North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham looked at the forest rather than the trees. There he found the perfect candidate for the head men’s basketball position left open by the departing Roy Williams. The hiring of Davis makes for a smooth transition for players, recruits and fans.
Forest For The Trees
Davis, a player at North Carolina from 1988-1992 will take on the responsibilities of head men’s basketball coach immediately.
Some history. Davis helped lead a 1991 team to a Final Four. He went on to graduate with a degree in Criminal Justice. The New York Knicks drafted Davis (20th) in 1992. He played professionally for 12 years.
Davis then moved on to ESPN where he was a basketball analyst from 2005-2011.
In 2012 he accepted a position as assistant coach at North Carolina working with Roy Williams. Williams said Davis was the perfect candidate. Noting that coaching involves teaching, relationships and passion which Williams said that Davis exhibited all three.
North Carolina will make the hiring of Davis official in a ceremony at Dean Smith Center this afternoon (Tuesday).
