ACC Nation Staff @accnation –

There feels like a close finish is in store to determine the winners of the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions of the ACC. At the moment Wake Forest and NC State lead the Atlantic while Pitt and Virginia Tech are on top of the Coastal. Alas, there’s still plenty of football left in this season and with each passing week it will become more challenging. Remember, we’ll just be at the half-way point after this weekend and after a quick scan of the schedule one can gather that the intensity will ratchet up significantly.

The latest ACC Nation Power Poll has plenty of surprises including the latest No. 1 ACC + 1 team. It might have been dreamt of early in the season by diehard fans but very few if any members of the media would have seen the latest rankings at this point in the schedule. Will there be further changes in that poll after this week? The magic eight ball says, most likely.

The ACC Nation crew making this season’s picks includes –

  • Will Ojanen
  • Xayveon
  • Jim Bresnahan
  • Chris Bond
  • Dave Wolpert
  • Mike Lewis
  • Jim Quist

There’s a short list of action this week in ACC + 1 play.

  • Georgia Tech vs Duke – Though Mike Lewis and Jim Bresnahan came at this from opposing ends with their picks both feel it will be close. Mike – “Giving edge to Dookies at home.” Jim – “This one could go either way.”
  • Florida State vs North Carolina – Not a game on the face of it that holds much promise for the Noles capturing their second win.
  • Virginia vs Louisville – The Cardinals weren’t exactly push-overs last week. Hope springs eternal for the fans. Mike Lewis – “Wahoos have shown incremental improvement on defense. A few extra days to prepare may help staff with needed defensive fixes and players to recover some from 3 games in 12 days.”
  • Wake Forest vs Syracuse – Both Jim and Mike think this could be an upset in the making….emphasis on ‘could be’. Neither went with Cuse in their picks. Jim Quist – “There shouldn’t be any question here about the better team. The Deacs offense could unleash a firestorm against Cuse just to flex their muscle to the conference.”
  • Notre Dame vs Virginia Tech – Both teams have significant home-field advantage with their faithful. Will that be enough for the Hokies? The Irish are still a formidable team. Jim Quist – “What is your team made of? That question is for both sides. You’ll have the opportunity to show the world if you’re forged of steel or just some shiny aluminum foil.”

Are there any ‘suspect’ picks this week? Well, of course. So let’s see who’s making them.

Mike has a magic feeling about Duke in their matchup against Georgia Tech. He goes against the odds and the rest of the crew with that pick.

Chris goes ‘homer’ on us with his Noles pick over the Tar Heels. A red flag flies over the Heels being a 17 1/2 point favorite. Everyone else is sticking with North Carolina.

With Louisville being the favorite Will and Jim Bresnahan go with the Cardinals while the rest of the crew are putting their plug nickels down on Virginia.

Wake Forest is the favorite here even though it’s only by 6. The board is a straight sweep for the Deacs.

A 1 point favorite is like being no favorite at all. Notre Dame fans have a little more money in the kitty but can they cash in at the end of the day? Xayveon and Mike think that the Hokies will be celebrating in the streets come Saturday night rather than the Irish. Risky move on their part of is there more to their pick? This game could have a close finish.
