Jim Quist @ACCTheQ –

The unhealthy act of hoarding has over the years created layer upon layer of teams in the Top 25 that needed to be introduced to the dumpster. Over the past few weeks not only has that trash receptacle been filled rather briskly it’s also been set on fire. Meanwhile over in the ACC, the Atlantic and Coastal Divisions are stirring up their own excitement as different teams are added to the mix in the two polls. It’s a pleasant change of pace. As much as I enjoy a good burger and fries once in a while there’s no way you’re keeping my attention with just those items on the menu. With six teams from the ACC+1 in the polls there’s much more to enjoy.

Much like last week and for that matter, most weeks the voters in the AP and USA Today Top 25 don’t see eye to eye on everything. The top five teams are where we start and things, again, have rolled over from last week. Get a rundown on the who crashed and burned among Top 25 teams on Sports News 9 – ACC Nation Podcast. Though these numbers won’t be the final say as to who makes the playoffs they do serve as an appetizer. Remember, the CFP rankings begin in week thirteen.

Following a 24-7 loss to Purdue, Iowa tumbled in both polls from No. 2 to No. 11. Unless something equally dramatic happens to multiple teams a shot at a playoff berth is now off the table.

The loss opened the door for Alabama to sneak back into the playoff picture.

Alright, let’s get this big hairy deal out of the way first. Why in the hell is Clemson still on either of these lists? That’s all the time I feel that’s worth spending on this topic so have it out among yourselves.

The Schedule

Notre Dame continues to languish in the middle of the pack. The Irish took a much-needed break this past weekend after a less than impressive win over Virginia Tech. They’ll enjoy the comforts of home as USC visits, followed by North Carolina and Navy all at home. Kudos to the scheduler as there are only three games after that with Virginia in Charlottesville, Georgia Tech back home and then Stanford on the West Coast.

Wake Forest continues to rise in the polls. The Deacs take on Army on the road followed by Duke at home and North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The final three games are NC State at home, at Clemson and finishing the regular season at Boston College.

NC State made a strong impression on voters who gave the Pack a good bump up in the rankings. The Pack is in Miami this week, have Louisville at home and then go to Tallahassee to visit the Seminoles. The final three matchups have them at Wake Forest and two home games with Syracuse and North Carolina.

Pitt debuts at No. 23 following a solid win over Virginia Tech. The Panthers have their work cut out for them the remainder of the season. Up next is Clemson at home, Miami, also at home and then at Duke. The final three games are with North Carolina and Virginia, both at home and a road trip to Syracuse.

Clemson could be in for a world of hurt as they face off with Pitt on the road this week. The Panthers want to make a show out of it for their home crowd. The Tigers then have Florida State at home and will travel the next week to Louisville. The final three regular season matchups have them entertaining UConn, Wake Forest and then traveling to South Carolina.

Virginia is at home with Georgia Tech this weekend, travel to BYU next weekend and have Notre Dame at home on November 13. The final games of the season have the Cavaliers headed north to take on Pitt and then hosting the Hokies for the Commonwealth Cup.

The remainder of the schedule will determine the Atlantic and Coastal Division Champs and lead to the ACC Football Championship in Charlotte.
