ACC Nation Power Poll Week Five – The ACC + 1 Rankings

ACC Nation Power Poll Week Eight

ACC Nation Staff @accnation –

Remember when Clemson, North Carolina and Miami were all sitting in the top 5 of the ACC Nation Power Poll? Well, Pepperidge Farm remembers. It literally seems like yesterday and in some regards it actually was. We’ve had multiple polls in which Clemson was the consensus No. 1 with Notre Dame sitting comfortably at No. 2. This week, five teams received a first place vote. So, even though the Irish have moved to the top spot in the rankings for ACC Nation Power Poll Week Five, only 3 out of 7 voters think they’re deserving of that position. Who else picked up a first place vote this week? Aside from the Irish there’s still faith in Clemson as the Tigers and the Tar Heels each pick up a vote. The team who can’t get no respect, NC State, picks up two votes.

What teams are making moves this week? Just about every one of them but let’s take a closer look and get some thoughts from our panel.

  • Notre Dame moves up from No. 2 to No. 1 this week. Jim Bresnahan weighs in – “Impressive win vs Wisconsin but will fall to Cincinnati.” Mike Lewis weighs in – “Bearcats will push all of their chips to the center of the table and put it all on the line. Notre Dame will not match Cincinnati’s intensity.”
  • Wake Forest jumps from No. 6 to No. 2 in the poll. Jim Bresnahan weighs in – “ACC’s best chance at a final 4 spot perhaps if they can win at UNC and Clemson.” Mike Lewis weighs in – “Deacs are bursting with confidence on both sides of the ball.”
  • NC State is on the move from No. 7 to No. 3. Mike Lewis weighs in on this week’s game with LA Tech – “A somewhat dangerous game for the Pack after a milestone win. A loss to LA Tech will re-attach the negative chatter on Doeren/staff.” Jim Quist weighs in – The Pack may have surprised themselves with the effectiveness on both sides of the ball against Clemson. After a rocky start things are clicking. Can they keep it up?”

  • Clemson is suddenly in a place they haven’t been in in years. The Tigers drop from No. 1 to No. 4. Mike Lewis on the BC game – “I’m not impressed with BC’s defense. Tiger Paws should be able to score on BC and possess enough offense to win at home.” Jim Quist weighs in – “It’s been a very long time since we’ve seen such a lopsided effort from Clemson. The defense can’t stay on the field that long without wearing down and they did. The coaching staff is more than capable of making adjustments but do they have the personnel to make things happen? Dangerous spot in which to lose a game as the fans sharpen their pitchforks.”

  • Jim Bresnahan on what he’s seen from the ACC thus far – “Great season for parity lovers, horrible season for ACC representation in major bowl games and the final 4! But, impressive performances by Georgia Tech and NC State or Clemson and North Carolina are vastly overrated. Well, at least we know that the Tar Heels were extremely overrated!”
  • Virginia Tech slips a notch from No. 4 to No. 5.
  • Boston College moves up from No. 8 into a tie at No. 6 Jim Quist weighs in – “This is the week in which we find out just how real Boston College is as they face Clemson in Death Valley. Sell us, Eagles.”
  • North Carolina slides from No. 2 to No. 6. Mike Lewis on this weekend’s game – “Heels speed on offense and athletes on defense should get them by the Dookies at home.”
  • Pitt moves up a notch from No. 9 to No. 8. Mike Lewis weighs in – “Panthers have just enough offense to win a close one in ATL.” Jim Quist weighs in – “This is the kind of game that could ruin Pitt should they lose to the Yellow Jackets. The Panthers can’t play anymore rollercoaster type of games and expect to be taken seriously. A win for GT would be huge in front of the home crowd. Close? It should be a barn burner.”

  • Virginia slips out of the top tier of the conference from No. 5 to No. 9. Mike Lewis looks at this weekend’s matchup – “Wahoos must prove to themselves they can perform well on the road. Defense unlikely to be better or even properly addressed until after Miami with a 2nd short week.”
  • Miami holds at No. 10.
  • Georgia Tech moves from No. 12 into a tie at No. 11.
  • Louisville remains at No. 11 and is tied with Georgia Tech. Jim Quist weighs in – “A huge matchup against Wake Forest that looks like it might be too much for the Cardinals to pull off. Best hope here is to keep it close and work on putting points on the board to match the Deacs flame-throwing offense.”
  • Duke remains at No. 13.
  • Syracuse holds at No. 14.
  • Florida State would like to vacate the cellar where they hold No. 15. Mike Lewis looks at the schedule – “Norvell can’t afford to lose another home game to programs at this level.”
