So, maybe you’ve heard the latest kerfuffle over the Top 25. For those of you who don’t haunt the halls of social media daily (lucky you) apparently an AP voter made the comment on a podcast that kind of downplayed the importance of voting among other things. That individual, as is often the case with social media boo-boo’s has been (not literally) tarred and feathered. The whole episode drew multiple spotlights and the ire of many.

Matt Zemek, who writes for College Sports Wire (USA Today) and who has been a guest on ACC Nation podcast has a knack for breaking things like this down into a more reasonable view and he has. As he works for the folks at USA Today he examined their Coaches’ Poll rather than a competitors for his article. Zemek notes that Top 25 polls are part of the landscape and bring fans into the conversation but the critical portion of that observation is that voters should take this process seriously. We whole-heartedly agree and often note that ranking teams means next to nothing until about Week 3. But media is about eye-balls on content.

“If a voter cannot honor certain notable results and the principles of fair play attached to them, we have a problem”, says Zemek. Spot on and the lack of seriousness among some voters (just peruse social media to find out who) diminishes the product. It can have far-reaching impact on schools and their programs along with coaches and players.

Zemek continues and points to some flaws in how teams are currently ranked in the Top 25 and why it should or shouldn’t be the way it is. Each strikes us as sensible. Let’s see what you think.
