There’s been an unforeseen reckoning lurking in college soccer. After several weeks of intense and heated play, a good portion of the ACC men’s and women’s teams that had the preseason poll seal of approval have fallen through the cracks. But wait, that’s not the complete story as several teams continue to rise and there are plenty of surprises as well. So, not all is gloom and doom.
The top two teams on the women’s side are from the ACC and if we were to have a bit of fun, so is the third, well almost. The top team on the men’s side has risen from a preseason No. 11 to No. 1 while the preseason favorite, an ACC team, has fallen out of the top 5. Let’s carry the fun over to the men’s side as well and partially claim No. 2.

Let’s talk big plus teams in college soccer. On the women’s side Clemson started out as a preseason No. 25 and is now in the top 10. While the Louisville men, who weren’t in the preseason Top 25 have moved from No. 34 into the top 10.

There are, unfortunately, teams that have gone in the opposite direction. Virginia, a preseason favorite at No. 5 in the women’s soccer poll is completely out while the Cavalier men who started at No. 15 are also long gone. Also on the women’s side of the poll the preseason No. 14 Pitt Panthers have also waved goodbye to the rankings.
