No more gloom and doom for conference football teams starting out the season ranked in the polls. In fact, Week 1 was rather remarkable. This week’s USA Today Coaches’ Poll is a pretty solid reflection of the performances of the ACC + 1 teams over Labor Day Weekend. Clemson maintained their top dog status following a win over Georgia Tech but it wasn’t without some huge question marks by the end of the game. Just keep in mind, it was Week 1 for the vast majority these teams and they’ll have to work out some kinks.
Among the ACC + 1 Notre Dame took the biggest tumble dropping 4 notches after a decent performance albeit a loss to Ohio State. Again, plenty of questions and time to get things in order. The Backyard Brawl lived up to everything we remembered and thought it would be again. Pitt came away with the bragging rights over West Virginia. That package offered up a taste of respect.

Miami and Wake Forest both nailed down wins but we didn’t get to see the complete compliment of what either team can deliver. The Canes moved up a notch while the Deacs, minus Sam Hartman dropped two spots. Good news for Wake Forest came down the pike when it was announced that Hartman has been cleared by medical staff and will be returning, perhaps sooner than many imagined. As in this week and that’s remarkable.

Could it be that the Seminoles are rounding the bend after an exhaustingly long rebuild? Following their somewhat heady win over LSU they’ve gained some traction in the Receiving Votes (RV) category and aren’t that far from entering the Top 25.
Speaking of starting out the season with a roar, Syracuse handed Louisville a painful road loss that helps Cuse seemingly get back on track as well. As for the Cards? We’ll have to wait and see. After game threads and chatrooms were a bit painful to observe from afar. If Scott Satterfield fails to deliver a remarkable season it will be a mighty toasty seat he’ll be sitting on.
