Golf Champions | Deac’s Back 9 Surge Delivers Triumph

It was all you would hope for in a battle for the ACC Women’s Golf Championship. The No. 1 seed, Wake Forest going head-to-head with the No. 2 seed, Florida State. The Reserve Golf Club in Pawleys Island, SC provided an ideal setting for the conference championship. The Seminoles opened a lead taking three of five matches on the front 9 but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Deacs. Wake Forest countered on the back 9 and locked down the title with a 3-1-1 match play victory.

The up and down of the match began as the Noles’ Charlotte Heath locked down a 3 & 1 win against the Wake’s Carolina Lopez-Chacarra. The Demon Deacons’ Rachel Kuehn and Seminoles’ Amelia Williamson went back and forth before Kuehn putted for Eagle to tie it up at 1-1.

The first lead for Wake Forest came on the play of Virunpat Olankitkunchal who took a 2 & 1 over Florida State’s Beatrice Wallin moving here team to a 2-1 advantage. Teammate Lauren Walsh delivered a birdie putt to close her match against Alice Hodge making it the second ACC title for Wake Forest women’s golf in the past three years.

The tie came in the match between Wake’s Mimi Rhodes and FSU’s Cecilie Finne-Ipsen that was still underway when Walsh clinched the winning match. Rhodes, who had a hole-in-one on No. 12 (the second ace of the tournament with the first by Louisville’s Carly Haines) was up 1 when play was called.

The NCAA women’s golf regionals are scheduled for May 9-11. Bids will be announced on Wednesday, April 27 at 5:00pm ET on the Golf Channel.
