The thing about basketball rankings is that you can typically see immediate results. Now, sometimes that’s good and other times, well it’s bad. Overall, if you’ve got your house in order there’s opportunity to rebound from a bad loss and a good win is a checkmark for the selection committee. In the ACC, men’s basketball typically has more than a handful of teams ranked and staying within the Top 25 even with conference losses. Not so much anymore. That honor has been handed off to the women who are tearing up the court.
In the latest AP Top 25 polls, especially on the men’s side, upsets have become a nightmare mid-season and most recently among the top 5 teams. UConn has leapt into the top spot moving up three and North Carolina is carrying the torch for the ACC sliding into No. 4 after also moving up three. Duke is the only other ACC men’s basketball team in the 25 (yes, you read that right) coming in at No. 7 moving up four spots.
Basketball
On the women’s side NC State moves back into the top 5 to the No. 4 slot. Unlike on the men’s side there are five additional teams in the 25. It’s a solid battle between the top teams in the poll and the NET has some revealing information as well so spend more than a moment glancing at the numbers. Right now, it’s all about the Pack but keep an eye on the Hokies, Cards, Noles and Irish in the Top 25.
Okay, so it’s mid January and there will be a growing sense of urgency to get positioned by no later than mid February for the ACC Tournament’s in early to mid March.
