
Virginia Tech President Tim Sands announced on Sunday that head football coach Brent Pry had been relieved of his duties. Sands said, “We appreciate Coach Pry’s efforts and service since 2021. Unfortunately, the results on the field were not acceptable and a change in leadership is necessary.”
The action comes a day after the Hokies had an embarrassing performance against Old Dominion in a home loss of 45-26.

Pry’s record since signing a six-year, $27.5 million contract in 2021 has been 16-24. Fans have been frustrated the program as they’ve had lackluster performances overall under both Pry and former head coach Justin Fuentes. This history has accelerated the hot seat status as supporters, alumni and the administration looked for results.

There will be a team meeting on Monday at 1:45p ET to discuss the situation with players. An important side-note that must be addressed by Offensive Coordinator Phillip Montgomery who has been named interim head coach is that under new rules players can hit the Transfer Portal on Monday and it stays open for 30 days. In addition, because Virginia Tech hasn’t played 4 games players are still eligible to redshirt.

Rector John Rocovich has charged Board of Visitors members J. Pearson and Ryan McCarthy to work with university leadership and Athletic Director Whit Babcock to develop a financial, organizational and leadership plan that will rapidly position the Virginia Tech football program to be competitive with the best in the ACC. That plan will be presented to the Board of Visitors later in September.
