The top tier of the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches’ Poll is awash in ACC men’s basketball teams. There is, however, a bit of an anomaly when it comes to the Pomeroy Ratings. More on that in a moment. This may turn out to be one of the best years in the ACC in quite a while. Hard to imagine a season eclipsing that of last year or for that matter any out of the past 15 years. In fact, at the start of this season many would have said it won’t be as good as last year but it’s always worth watching.
For those of you slow to start watching basketball, you’re in for a treat. Each week brings a new revelation as to just how good the four teams, Duke, Louisville, North Carolina and Virginia, truly are. The scary good thing is they are all getting better in front of our eyes. And, it’s early.
Here’s the thing. These four aren’t the only teams that are coming together and offering up surprises. You may have heard, Virginia Tech knocked off Michigan State in Maui. The irony, the Hokies were receiving votes last week in the AP (good enough for #38) but are nowhere to be found this week. Granted, the upset win was after the votes were tabulated.
Look for some movement, at the least, in the Receiving Votes category again. Hoping for a ranking at this point may be premature, but voters can often be fickle.
Now, here’s the anomaly we referred to earlier. As of Tuesday, November 26 Michigan State is still ranked No. 1 in KenPom. The answer here is that stats are simply numbers and there is no practical way to completely factor in the subjective.
