There may be no better way to kick off football across ACC Nation than with 14 games over 5 days. Labor Day weekend gets a bit of an extension with a Thursday night game. It’s time to kick start our recliner anchored prognosticators and see what they’re made of with their picks.
Last year the race to the finish line was neck and neck. It featured what one may consider reckless choices along the way that surprisingly paid off.
There are plenty more of those types of games to come this season. We’ll see who steps out onto the branch first.
The opening week doesn’t appear, on the face of it, to offer any matchups that could be wild and woolly. Here’s where we apply the word, however.
Picks – ACC Nation Power Poll
Our first application comes with Wake Forest who starts a freshman quarterback due to the suspension of the presumed starter as they meet Tulane. The Green Wave will not be easy pickings.
Next, Army West Point is a tough nut to crack. It’s a mindset and they’re good at roughing up opponents. Duke has the wherewithal but needs to get past opening game jitters to deliver a solid win.
If Wolfpack fans were hoping for a tasty cupcake to open the season then you are in for a surprise. James Madison has a history of rolling with the big boys. Don’t let them get out in front because it’ll be lots of work to catch up. Listen to ACC Nation Podcasts – NC State JMU
The Michigan-Notre Dame game has a number of, “What-if’s” that could turn this game for the Irish. Never, ever discount the advantage of a home crowd.
Picks – This Week’s Football Schedule
There’s been a bit of trash talk going on with this Louisville-Alabama game. Want to put the college football world on it’s head? If Bobby Petrino pulls out a win against Nick Saban, bring out the Pappy’s.
The guys aren’t too worried about Miami throwing LSU out with the bathwater. Games on the road to open a season are always a tad squirrelly so keep an eye on how quickly the Canes shed their jitters.
The final game of the weekend will have some serious implications for both Florida State and Virginia Tech. A loss will put more of a dent into the Seminoles as they battle Clemson for division supremacy. The Hokies can ill afford to lose by any significant margin as it will take the wind from their sails.
