The taste of victory is intoxicating. Following North Carolina’s NCAA Field Hockey Championship run of 2018 the rest of the conference wants in on the action. When it comes to titles, one is never enough. Though it’s early in the season ACC teams are having a strong showing. The latest NFHCA Top 25 includes seven conference teams including four among the top 10.
The Tar Heels started the season off in an enviable position. Preseason polling merely confirmed what everyone else already knew. With a seasoned roster North Carolina would have to be the team all others needed to get by if they want a title.
North Carolina isn’t the only conference team that has been peeling off win after win against top ranked opponents. Duke has knocked off last year’s championship contender Maryland and Northwestern. Virginia clipped Ohio State and Louisville took out Michigan State.
But, it’s the level of competition and consistency in which the Tar Heels are winning that catches your attention. Princeton, Penn State, Michigan and Iowa, to name a few, were all preseason top 10 teams.
Taste Of Victory
With the good also comes the bad. As noted in the rankings three of the teams fell from grace.
Wake Forest had a solid win over Penn State, 2-0 before falling to Princeton, 2-1.
Boston College fell to Maryland, 3-1 and Northwestern, 3-2.
Syracuse has two close wins against UMass-Lowell and Lafayette before stumbling against Cornell, 2-1.
Several solid face-to-face match ups in store this weekend.
