Upset week continued last night in ACC men’s basketball action but the damage began to trail off a bit. The big win of the night belonged to Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons got the better of NC State early and held on for the win. Notre Dame had an idea that taking home a victory from Tobacco Road would be a great idea. The Irish almost pulled the rabbit out of the hat against North Carolina. In Charlottesville, two in-state rivals were rockin’ the house. Virginia Tech wanted another upset win over Virginia. Neither the Cavaliers or their fans were having any part of that plan.

Wake Forest rolled out the welcome mat to cross-state rival NC State and proceeded to unleash an offensive flurry. The Demon Deacons went up by as much as 22 points against the Wolfpack and then watched it wither away.

Jaylen Hoard put up 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Torry Johnson’s 11 point performance helped nab the win for Wake Forest. Johnson hit a jumper with just over a minute left in a one point game. Then with under 15 seconds left hit two free throws putting wax to paper. It sealed the fate of the Wolfpack.

Torin Dorn had 18 points and C.J. Bryce 17 for NC State. The Wolfpack came back from a 51-29 deficit at the start of the second half to tie the game. It wasn’t enough to put Wake Forest away.

Coby White led the way with 17 points while Luke Maye tossed in 14 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Cameron Johnson netted 11 for the Tar Heels.

North Carolina went on a 12-1 tear to come back against Notre Dame. Part of that was fueled by Nassir Little. In the final 11 minutes of the game Little pumped in 11 points to close the door on the Irish.

With under 7 minutes in the second half Notre Dame’s Prentiss Hubb put the Irish on top by 1 point. Notre Dame just couldn’t get the horses to move the cart after that as they missed their next six opportunities.

Hubb ended up leading the Irish in scoring with 18 points for the game. Teammates John Mooney and D. J. Harvey added to the stat line with 16 and 15 points respectively. Mooney grabbed 19 rebounds for the Irish.

With upset week in full tilt Virginia had lingering memories of last year’s OT loss against Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers were having none of it this year.

The Cavaliers went 10 of 14 on 3’s. They were 17 of 25 (68%) from the field in the first half. The Hokies ran into a wall offensively and managed 2 of 9 from the 3. From the field it was a paltry 7 of 20 (35%).

Overall, Virginia went 13 of 23 from the 3 and 31 of 53 (58.5%) from the field. It demonstrated they are more than just a ‘defensive’ team.

Virginia’s De’Andre Hunter pumped in 21 points while Ty Jerome had 14 and a career-high 12 assists. Kyle Guy popped in an additional 15 points for Virginia.

The Hokies’ Nickeil Alexander-Walker ripped off 19 points plus Ahmed Hill hit 14 for Virginia Tech.
