Power Moves – United Soccer Coaches Top 25

Jim Quist @ACCTheQ

The top teams in collegiate soccer are based in the ACC. Clemson lays claim to the men’s Top 25 while Florida State is number one among women’s teams. The conference exercises some power moves in the rankings owning three of the top five men’s spots and the top two positions in the women’s poll. If you’ve been following the schedules for ACC soccer you’ve noticed something different. The first thing is that the conference played during the Fall of 2020 and also held men’s and women’s championships. On the other side of the equation the NCAA moved the season to the Spring of 2021 and also the championships.

Here are some specific details to help sort through the weeds of a split schedule. Starting with the ACC men –

  • Teams returned to two divisions – Atlantic and Coastal
  • Five matches are played within each division with one cross-division match-up
  • The two division champions will play each other (at the higher seed) on April 13
  • That winner will then play at Clemson, the fall ACC Championship winner on April 17
  • An automatic qualifier to the NCAA will be determined by that outcome
  • The NCAA College Cup will be played May 13-17 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary
