There’s nothing quite like dreaming of hitting it rich by playing the lottery. ACC men’s and women’s soccer has hit the jackpot in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 polls. By playing their own version of ‘power ball soccer’ the conference draws a lucky 7 in both polls. Then, add another 3 in the receiving votes category. When it comes to the top 10 the winning number is 4, again in both preseason rankings.
Last season saw a wild ride in women’s competition which ultimately ended with an all-ACC NCAA championship. Florida State and North Carolina fought to a 1-0 conclusion with the Seminoles taking home the trophy.
The NCAA women’s soccer tournament was filled to the brim with conference teams. Ten teams hit the initial bracket. Clemson, Boston College and Louisville fell by the wayside in the first round, then Wake Forest departed in the second.
By the third round, Virginia, Duke, Virginia Tech and NC State had finished their journey. The remaining two, as previously mentioned, made their way to Cary, NC for the championship.
Power Ball Soccer
Could that be what’s in store again this season? Though preseason polls are typically weighted heavily in favor of how teams finished the previous season, the answer may be, yes.
United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25 – ACC Women
The roller coaster ride of 2018 ACC men’s soccer season ebbed when it should have flowed. Wake Forest, the nation’s topped ranked team and No. 1 seed in the NCAA men’s soccer tournament surprisingly dropped in the third round.
Syracuse and NC State fell in the second round while Duke made it to the quarterfinals.
The question looming is will there be a better finish in store for the ACC men this year? Can these teams use the preseason rankings to launch their own version of power ball soccer and bring home a trophy?
