A season can turn on just one game. Florida State and Virginia turned a corner when they played each other with the Noles coming out on top. With that win it appeared (careful, no assuming allowed) Florida State had all but blocked the Cavaliers regular season title. Alas, any given Sunday unleashed Notre Dame on an unsuspecting Noles. It was a loss they won’t forget. Then, Virginia continued to curse the Yum! Center for Louisville when it comes to holding off the Cavaliers.
It was as simple as that. All was said and done when the buzzer sounded at 0:00 as Tony Bennett locked up another ACC regular title. The impact of losing one game has an interesting ripple effect across the body of water known as collegiate basketball. Sometimes it’s just in the rankings while at other times it goes much further and shifts the landscape of how a team is seeded. Whether that be in the conference tournament or ultimately in the NCAA field of 68.
There is an impact in this week’s AP and USA Today Top 25’s. A shift, a not so subtle movement. Even though it still recognizes the importance of Florida State’s earlier win over Virginia it speaks volumes. The statement should be kept in the back of your mind when the selection committee submits their choices in about a week and a half.
