Jim Quist @ACCTheQ –
Once in a while, when you lurk in the deepest, darkest recesses of the internet or in this case browse Twitter, you find something intriguing. Thus was the case when I stumbled upon a re-tweet from US Hop Talk @USHopTalk. That led to yet another site featuring the headline, ‘New Belgium Adding Old Tuffy 19.2oz Cans For NC State’. Okay, I’m hooked. The site, MyBeerBuzz.com featured a number of interesting details including the label. Keep in mind that it takes a bit of time to get approval for such things from the Feds so it lends credence to the post.
Collaboration brews for college sports have been around for a while. Not all schools though have been open to sales of alcohol at their venues. Wake Forest and Louisville have been ahead of the curve in the ACC.
According to the post, New Belgium, who just happens to have their east coast brewery in North Carolina (Asheville to be exact) has partnered with NC State. The beer, to be called ‘Old Tuffy’ (nice tie in with the mascot) is a lager with an ABV of 4.7%. The suds will be available in a 19.2 oz can with the everyday 12 oz can and kegs to follow.
To do my due diligence, as there was no attribution in the post, I called the folks at New Belgium only to find out they had extended Easter into Monday. My next move was to send an email to the folk(s) at MyBeerBuzz to see if there was any additional information. As of the end of business (Monday) I had not heard back from them.
Earlier today after I had my interest piqued I noticed a tweet from North Carolina sports media mogul Joe Ovies. New Belgium’s ‘Old Tuffy’ is on a roll.
As you can see, Joe likes a cold, sudsy brew once in a while (as evidenced by this tweet) later in the day. Smart guy, that Joe.
I also noticed some earlier discussion at the 24/7 site, Pack Pride about ‘Old Tuffy’. By this afternoon, the interwebs were ablaze with the news and Pack Pride was on the case. Pun intended.
By tomorrow, I expect an epic tweet storm discussing the plus and minuses of brewing up a lager called ‘Old Tuffy’. And if you would, please be sure to let me know where I can get some when it comes out. Cheers.
