InterMat Individual Wrestling Rankings

When you look over the InterMat individual wrestling rankings you’ll notice an asterisk beside a few names. Fourteen of the ranked ACC wrestlers bring along an important level of experience with them this year. Each of those individuals competed in the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships.

A conference record 41 wrestlers made it to the next level with 19 seeds last season. In the opening round there were 5 upsets with 8 individuals reaching the semifinals. Was it a good year for ACC wrestling?

The answer is found in the NCAA Championships. NC State’s Michael Macchiavello and Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught faced off for the 197 lb. NCAA title. It wasn’t the only championship final for an ACC team as the Wolfpack’s Hayden Hidlay battled in the 157 weight class. Ultimately, Macchiavello brought home the sole title.

This promises to be a highly competitive season for ACC wrestling. With 23 ranked individuals on the front end of the year it wouldn’t be too much to anticipate another run for an NCAA championship or two.

Will the conference exceed last year’s record 41 wrestlers in the NCAA Championships?

In case you’re counting, the Hokies and Wolfpack are neck and neck again with ranked wrestlers. Both teams have traded king of the hill status in the ACC for the past few years.

Being ranked though is simply a bench mark for progress. The true measure comes at the end of the season. Those goals can range from measurable improvement to winning titles.

Last year’s final NWCA Top 25 wrestling poll featured three ACC teams. It began with four but Pitt slipped out as the year progressed.

  • #6     NC State
  • #10   Virginia Tech
  • #24   North Carolina

The first look at team rankings should be released by the NWCA at the end of October.
