If you were to have a goal in any sport perhaps aspiring to be the best would rank among the top 5 reasons. At the moment, the ACC is certainly among the best conferences for college soccer. Having the top ranked men’s and women’s teams in the latest United Soccer Coaches’ Poll helps fill in a few of the boxes in that check list.
With a total of fifteen teams in both of this week’s Top 25 polls the promise of another post-season trophy dance looms large. But before we get too far ahead of ourselves it’s not all wine and roses.
Last year’s women’s national champions and preseason No. 1 Florida State hit a couple of bumps in the road. The Seminoles encountered PAC 12 opponents UCLA and USC. The Bruins came away with a 2-1 victory while the Trojans won 3-2. Early season jitters? Perhaps. With only two weeks of games played there’s plenty of recovery time ahead.
The win moved UCLA from No. 4 into No. 2 and the Bruins picked up 8 First Place Votes. USC moved up from No. 5 to No. 4.
On the men’s side of the action preseason No. 1 Maryland fell to No. 12 Virginia, 2-0. The Terps fell from the top spot to No. 3 while the Cavaliers moved up to No. 7 in the Week One poll for the men.
North Carolina who began at No. 6 in the preseason poll had the biggest hit to their ranking after a tie with Creighton and falling to UCF.
