Football ’25 | ACC Places Four In Final AP Rankings

Football

The first year of the 12 team CFP road to the national title in college football was a wild and exciting ride. It culminated Monday evening in what appeared to be a lop-sided matchup between Ohio State and Notre Dame. The entire scheme and final game pointed out some issues that need to be corrected or simply adjusted in the coming season. As the saying goes, if not everyone was happy you must be doing something right. Sadly that statement does not apply to officiating which is still in need of a strong correcting hand.

Even with 20/20 hindsight rankings won’t make everyone happy. It’s difficult enough for those who vote for the AP Top 25 during the regular season to even come close to a realistic reflection of performance. Four conference teams made their way into the final 25 with one in the RV category just a few spots out. Overall, not a bad showing for the ACC which is in the midst of multiple coaching changes where smooth sailing is the exception rather than the rule.

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips has put forth a change to that would protect the regular season football champion and open a door for additional teams to earn a spot in the CFP. The first concept has the second and third teams in the conference playing each other. The second concept pits the regular season champion against the fourth team and second and third teams playing on Thanksgiving weekend with the winners of those two games meeting up for the championship tilt on it’s regular date. The issue with the latter is it would interfere with traditional rivalry football games. Changes, they are a ‘coming.
