First Round

The ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament got underway with first round action in Greensboro on Wednesday. Even though the reigning national champion Notre Dame enters as the favorite there’s a team in Louisville saying, ‘hold on there Skippy’. This year’s lineup presents far more of a challenge to both teams. And then, there’s Miami lurking over in the stands waiting for their shot at another win against both teams. First things first though. Let’s take a look at first round action.

No. 12 seed Virginia started with an 11-0 lead before Emma Guy helped No. 13 seed Boston College get back in the game with four scores to close the gap 14-10. Guy’s 12 points at the half put the Eagles up 29-23.

Boston College saw their 12 point lead against Virginia early in the third quarter fizzle as the Eagles hit a cold spell and went 2 for 12. The Cavaliers went on a 24-5 run to take the lead.

Virginia, led by Jocelyn Willoughby’s 29 points and Dominique Toussaint’s 11 kept Boston College at bay hitting 14-26 in the second half. The Cavaliers delivered on free throws going 26-3 against the Eagles.

Willoughby led Virginia with 13 rebounds to add her 10th double-double of the season to the stat sheet.

Emma Guy led with 18 points and 7 rebounds for Boston College.

Final score: Virginia 77 Boston College 61

Virginia plays No. 5 seed Syracuse late Thursday morning in second round action.

First Round Results – ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament

The second game of the day had No. 10 seed Virginia Tech facing off with No. 15 seed Wake Forest.

The Hokies went on a three point tear in the first half knocking down 7-12. Overall Virginia Tech nailed 11-27 from the arc and locked up the free throw line hitting 86 percent (18-21).

At the half Tech lead 55-30 and rolled off another 30 points in the second half.

The Hokies’ Taylor Emery netted 26 and Regan Magarity notched her 21st double-double kicking in 22 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Trinity Baptiste notched 12 and 15 boards for the Hokies.

The Demon Deacons’ Alex Sharp delivered a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Virginia Tech head coach Kenny Brooks came away with his 400th career win as the Hokies defeated Wake Forest, 85-63.

Final score: Virginia Tech 85 Wake Forest 63

Virginia Tech heads into a matchup with No. 7 seed Clemson in today’s early evening second round game.

First Round Results – ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament

The final first round game found No. 11 seed Duke going up against No. 14 seed Pitt. It was the first time the two teams had played in the tournament.

The Panthers kept it interesting in the first half with Duke leading by just 4 going into halftime. The Blue Devils had a 22-6 tear that Pitt could not find an answer to as the lead went to 51-36.

Duke’s Miela Goodchild, a freshman, drilled five of the team’s 12-20 attempts from the arc finishing with 19 points. Haley Gorecki added 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Jade Williams and Faith Suggs grabbed 7 rebounds.

Danielle Garven led the way for Pitt with 16 points. Jasmine Whitney and Cara Judkins grabbed 5 rebounds and Whitney added 6 assists.

Duke head coach Joanne McCallie is the seventh head coach to have 20 ACC Women’s Tournament wins.

Final score: Duke 86 Pitt 64

Duke heads to the second round to face No. 6 seed Florida State in the evening matchup of the tournament.
