The NCAA’s loss is the ACC’s gain. The former NCAA National Coordinator of Women’s Basketball Officiating will now oversee women’s officiating in the ACC. Commissioner John Swofford named Debbie Williamson as the new Supervisor of Women’s Basketball Officials last week.
ACC Senior Associate Commissioner of Women’s Basketball, Mary McElroy is enthusiastic about the addition of Williamson. “Debbie has a great vision for women’s basketball officiating – both in the ACC and nationally. We will work together in the coming months to refine our structure and ensure we have a diverse roster of quality officials.”
Swofford, in making the announcement made note of Williamson’s stature within the realm of college basketball.
The position of Supervisor includes oversight, evaluation, training and recruitment of officials. It also includes a player to referee program.

McElroy emphasized, “We will strive to provide support and guidance for our current officials, enhance our officiating opportunities and further our commitment to developing future officials.”
Williamson currently serves as the coordinator of women’s basketball officials for the following conferences. American Athletic, Atlantic 10, Big East, Ivy League and Metro Atlantic. She is also the chair of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Sport Officials.

While with the NCAA Williamson was key in developing the online NCAA Women’s Basketball Officiating Center Court. She was influential in emphasizing consistency in applying rules and increasing accountability of Division I officials.
Her background includes serving on the officiating staff of several organizations. Those include the Big South, Colonial Athletic, Peach Belt, South Athletic, Carolinas-Virginia Athletic, USA South and Old Dominion Athletic. Additionally, she’s worked a number of NCAA conference tournament games and regionals in Division II.
As a student-athlete Williamson was part of the Louisiana Tech team that had four Women’s Final Four appearances. That same team won the first-ever NCAA women’s basketball national championship in 1982.
After graduation Williamson was an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana and later at Georgia Southern.
Williamson was a teaching assistant professor and online instructor at NC State, Campbell, West Alabama and Meredith College.
