Yeah, the wait is over. College hoops are back. You’ve just got to tough out a couple more days. With the release of the Week 1 AP Top 25 for college basketball and Ken Pomeroy getting an early jump on ratings, it’s time to take a closer look. Xayveon and Jim have teamed up to talk numbers and share some thoughts.
Jim: There’s a different landscape for ACC men’s basketball teams in the AP Top 25. The same can be said for the KenPom ratings. There’s not so many teams from the ACC grabbing a spot this season.
Let’s go back to last year. I’ll use the final USA Today Coaches’ Poll for this exercise. In Week 1 here’s how things looked for the top 5.
Now, the conference teams that were Top 25 or Receiving Votes.

#17 Virginia Tech

#42 Notre Dame
How did teams fare in the final poll?

#3 Michigan State (Week 1 #10)
#4 Duke (Week 1 #3)

Just as a quick note in case you were wondering how Kansas, Kentucky and Gonzaga finished the season. Kansas dropped to No. 16, Kentucky ended up at No. 7 and Gonzaga came in at No. 6 in the final poll.
Xayveon: What can you take away from last year’s preseason favorites and the teams that are in the AP Top 25? Just because you’re an early pick doesn’t mean squat when March rolls around. That’s when the rubber hits the road.
As we noted at the beginning, the ACC isn’t as deep, at least in polling, as they were last year. Don’t let that mis-lead you. Though there isn’t as many teams in the polls the depth at the top looks better, if that’s possible.
In Pt. 2 of this article (Wednesday, October 23) we’ll take a closer look at each of the teams in the conference. We’ll toss in some thoughts on teams in the top 5 as well.
