Close Up Look At The Talent Pool For The ’21 NFL Draft

Jim Quist @ACCTheQ –

With seven rounds of 32 teams picking that adds up to 224. Then throw in up to 32 compensatory picks and there still aren’t enough slots available in the NFL Draft for college players. Then we move on to the UDFA negotiations which opens a few extra doors. No guarantees. Lots of what if’s. NFL Mock Drafts are beginning to expand their rankings so it’s time for a close up view how ACC Nation talent stacks up.

Each year the same scenario plays out in front of us. The one major variable is the quality of the players available. The more the merrier for NFL teams. However, if there is more quality in that pool of draftees it can often mean there’s excess quantity. That’s not a good thing for the players.

Here’s the good and bad news all wrapped up into one ball of stress and anxiety. There’s a whole lot of quality among the ranks this year. Hey, as an NFL fan I’m all on-board that gravy train. On the other side of this equation, as a college football fan, I know I’ll be second guessing a lot of picks. None of us can even imagine (unless you were in those shoes at one time) what a player (and his family) will be going through until all is said and done.

Close Up

So, before we delve into the latest compilation of Big Boards in Mock Draft world let’s toss in a bit of a disclaimer. A headache is in your future if you attempt an apples (offensive lineman) to oranges (wide receiver) comparison. Just don’t go there. The needs of each NFL team changes dramatically each year. A close up look finds reasons that range from older or injured players to a desire by coaches and management to put fresh blood on the roster. How your favorite team drafts is often opposite of what you perceive their needs to be.

Who are the top picks by position for ACC Nation teams? A side note for first time readers, we have always included Notre Dame football in our coverage. We’ll start with a close up of the positions.
