Blue Monday

Blue Monday

Can Duke turn “Blue Monday”, as described in the lyrics of Fats Domino, into a calling card their opponents fear?  Duke and Texas Tech both have a win in the three game series. Opportunity knocks. What will it be, a “Blue Monday” or a “Blue Devil Monday”?

In the first game Saturday, Duke came up short against the Red Raiders, 6-4. The Blue Devils have risen to the occasion in elimination games thus far and the second game was no different. For the fifth time in the last week Duke found their mojo in the 11-2 win on Sunday.

A combination of Graeme Stinson on the mound and a flurry of offense helped the Blue Devils overwhelm Texas Tech. Stinson pitched six shutout innings, struck out six and prevented the Red Raiders from getting mileage off five hits.

The Red Raiders Caleb Killian kept Duke in check for three innings and then it was lights out in the fourth.

Blue Monday – The Bracket

Duke’s Joey Loperfido helped put the team up 2-0 with an RBI triple. Max Miller followed with an RBI double that sent Loperfido across home plate. Then, Chris Crabtree came up to bat and pulled yet another RBI double that sent Miller around the bases to make it 4-0.

In the fifth, Stinson continued keeping Texas Tech in check. Zack Kone brought in Chris Proctor to move the scoreboard to 5-0 and then Griffin Conine singled, Loperfido walked and Kennie Taylor zinged a single into middle field. Miller blasted a triple down the right field line that cleared the bases and put Duke up 9-0. Jimmy Herron then shot one deep into the outfield that allowed Miller to add the tenth run for the Blue Devils.

Texas Tech put up two late game runs in the seventh and eighth innings. For Duke, Loperfido had another RBI, this time on a single that elevated Duke to 11-2.

The Lubbock Super Regional leads to the Road To Omaha for the winner. Coverage of the final game will be on ESPN2 and begins at 4:00p E (3:00p C). That puts it right in the middle of the hottest part of the day in Texas.  How best to describe the weather? It will be hot as blue blazes at game time. The anticipated high is 101 but it’s a nice dry heat as the humidity levels barely reach 20%.
