There’s nothing like a ‘take you out to the woodshed’ type of thrashing to set things straight. That’s exactly what Duke laid on Kentucky last week. The Blue Devils performance in the season opener created a wave among voters in the AP Top 25. That surge sends them up the rankings as they bump off Kansas for the top spot.
Each of the ACC teams starting out the season in the poll delivered a win. Only one team suffered a rankings anomaly (moving backward) even with a decisive victory and that was Virginia Tech. Perhaps the loss of Chris Clarke came into play for voters. If so, then the return of Ty Outlaw shouldn’t be overlooked in that same context.
The ACC has five of seven teams in the poll ranked in the top 15. Two teams are in the top 20 and another three teams are in the receiving votes category.
In addition to how conference men’s basketball teams look in the poll we’ll look at the numbers from KenPom. The ratings plus the Adjusted Offense and Defense for ACC teams.
Blue Devils Bump Kansas
Things are not quite the same when it comes to the Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings. That difference of opinion is human versus computer. The truly interesting read is how teams are rated based upon offensive and defensive performances. With a few more weeks worth of statistics to work with this portion of the ratings will become a regular ‘must read’ to keep up with team performance.

Game To Watch
- Georgia Tech @ #5 Tennessee 9:00pm ET ESPN2
This will be a big challenge for the Yellow Jackets. Coach Josh Pastner already knows what’s under the hood of his team. It will be interesting to see if he can fine tune the performance of his players sufficiently during the game to make a dent in the Vols.
