ACC men’s college basketball gets underway in earnest in less than a month. The opening day schedule is an interesting mish-mash of ‘meh’ and ‘spectacular’. While you count down the days we’ll offer up yet another early look at rankings from Athlon Sports.
A total of 7 teams make the poll with 5 among the top 15, one just outside that group and another in the 20-25 range.
Who does Athlon Sports pick as the top team in college basketball this season? Kansas tops the elite group of 5 that includes Kentucky, Duke, Gonzaga and Nevada.
That mix will be immediately tested as Kentucky and Duke face off in Indianapolis on Tuesday, November 6. Put that game on your calendar. It will air on ESPN at 9:30pm ET.
Athlon Sports’ College Basketball Top 25 – The ACC
Earlier in the year we shared Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook’s Top 25. They list the same 7 ACC teams but have a bit of a difference of opinion on where they rank.
Here’s a look at other Top 25 rankings with some great notes –
Things have changed (personnel) since the release of several of these rankings. The more recent rankings have the advantage of taking those factors into consideration.
We’re not too far away from conference coaches making their preseason picks as well as the preseason AP Top 25. It will be interesting to see how close all of the early Top 25’s are to where ACC coaches believe their counterparts will perform.
The biggest challenge is determining whether Duke, Virginia or North Carolina has the roster and game plan to take the conference. However, there are a minimum of four other teams in these rankings that have other ideas about the ACC.
If you missed the release of the ACC men’s college basketball schedule we have it here.
