With three weeks of action (Week Zero-Week 2) complete ACC football in week 2 shakes out the chaff and establishes new leaders. After the upcoming Week 3 of play and maybe even Week 4 considering that Clemson, Louisville, SMU, Stanford and Syracuse have an off week coming up maybe we can start seriously looking at Top 25 rankings. As for standings, it’s best to take the same approach. For the moment, Syracuse, Boston College, Virginia and Georgia Tech are the top teams with ACC wins/losses while the same top three plus Duke and Pitt are the top 5 with overall wins. A lot to digest, isn’t it?
Will and Jim pull out the week’s worth of ACC football action, take a look and share their thoughts on what has transpired thus far. There’s a handful of surprises in both the win and loss categories. Some results should have you re-thinking where teams stand in the conference and how they’ll perform in the upcoming weeks.
ACC Football
Looking ahead to Week 3 there are some critical games in ACC football and then there are those that will help spray the dusty roads that lead to how teams are ranked. Among the critical, Florida State needs to find themselves and deliver a punch to Memphis that says, we’ve figured things out. Boston College can speak volumes about their potential or even as to who they are with a solid performance against Missouri. Has Pitt found their golden ticket? We’ll find out in the Backyard Brawl where one team or the other comes away with a black eye, bloody lip and a bruised ego.
In other games, Virginia Tech needs to find themselves and a big win over Old Dominion might just be the ticket. Wake Forest has a big challenge in Ole Miss. Will the Deacs shake off last weekend’s stumble and find a way to redeem themselves? Finally, one of those old rivalries that just won’t go away rolls into Scott Stadium as Maryland starts off the favorite against Virginia. Talk about finding your way to a comfortable coaching seat, if Tony Elliott pulls off a win the thermometer gets notched down several degrees.
A quick look at the latest AVCA Top 25 where Pitt has risen to the top and three ACC teams hold spots in the top 5 and another three are in the rankings, too.
